Driftwood
The Olympic Peninsula coast was the first thing on my solo Washington trip itinerary, so when I landed I drove straight west to Forks. Then I started the hike at the trailhead for Second Beach. As I started my walk through the old growth redwoods, the air heavy with moisture, I almost wanted to cry with how beautiful and mystical this forest felt. The thick forest suddenly opened up to the view of the coast. I didn’t get to stay long, so came back to the coast the next morning (to the nearby First Beach where this photograph was taken). It is a melancholic scene but so beautiful that you can’t really be sad, just moved.
